CHESTERTOWN, MD – Washington College recently welcomed high school students from Chester County Futures, a local post-secondary success program, for a transformative overnight college immersion experience—an innovative initiative designed to inspire, prepare, and empower future college scholars. Over the course of two impactful days and one immersive night, students lived the life of a college student. From sleeping in dorm rooms and dining in campus halls to managing schedules and navigating the campus independently, participants were given a firsthand look at what college life is really like. “Our students had the opportunity to be away from home and experience more than just a campus tour, but perhaps their first overnight experience on a college campus,” said Mary Williams, Director of Community Engagement for Chester County Futures. “It was more than a visit—it was a defining moment where students saw themselves not just at college, but belonging in college.” The program included guided campus tours, interactions with current students and staff, and an exploration of the surrounding Chestertown community. Students learned to navigate unfamiliar spaces and engage with new environments—key skills for transitioning to college life.
Programs like this are key to closing the gap between high school and higher education, especially for first-generation college-bound students. By making college real, tangible, and exciting, Washington College is helping young scholars take their first confident steps toward a successful future.
